2180cc VW Engine

2180cc VW Engine

created January 25th, 2013

N891JF is powered by a 2180cc bored and stroked Type 1 Volkswagen engine. I built a similar 2110cc engine for my '74 Karmann Ghia back in 1978, but using 90.5mm bore rather than 92mm. This is after a fresh rebuild, initiated shortly after I bought it, after putting about 18 flying hours on it. The story of the rebuild is below...

Here's the culprit...a blasted "nearly spun" bearing. I had noticed that the oil pressure wasn't exactly stellar, but it did (barely) meet my minimum requirement for 10 psi per thousand RPM. On the morning this happened, runup pressure was reasonable, but it didn't stay that way for long!

Commentary for these photos will follow eventually, but for now I'm trying to get the plane back in the air, so it'll have to wait a while. I think you'll get the gist of it from the photos though. Clearancing and re-checking for interferences is the main concern, just as with buiding a large-bore Corvair. Attention to detail is critical...
